About Rathmines Holy Trinity
Rathmines Holy Trinity is a Church of Ireland church in Rathmines, County Dublin. It is in the Diocese of Dublin & Glendalough.
History
Holy Trinity was designed by John Semple (c. 1801 to c. 1873) and completed as a chapel of ease of the united parishes of St Peter's and St Kevin's in Dublin. It was consecrated to the Holy and Undivided Trinity on Sunday 1 June 1828, the Feast of the Holy Trinity, by the Archbishop of Dublin, the Most Reverend William Magee.
The parish school was built in 1852 as the Township Schools, on Upper Rathmines Road. Alterations and repainting were carried out in the church in 1854, during which a special licence from the Archbishop of Dublin permitted services to be held in the schoolhouse. The church was later enlarged, a new organ was erected, the parochial hall was built and the first rectory was purchased. The rectory stands opposite the church on the corner of Purser Gardens.
Notable features
There are three large stained glass windows, at the east end and in the north and south transepts, and three smaller windows, two in the south transept and one in the north. The smaller north transept window was originally set in an exterior wall and was re-mounted on an interior wall during later renovations.
A three-panel war memorial of carved stone stands in the south transept, erected after the Great War in accordance with a decree by Archbishop Barton of Dublin that every parish commemorate those who died in the conflict. It was designed by R.C. Orpen and executed by Sharp and Emery. A smaller Second World War memorial carries the names of ten members of the parish who lost their lives, and two framed Rolls of Honour list a further 94 names of those who served with the Allies, among them 23 women.
