About Newcastle
Newcastle is a Church of Ireland church in Newcastle, County Wicklow. It is in the Diocese of Dublin & Glendalough.
History
The history of the church is closely linked with that of Newcastle castle, the first of which was built shortly after the Anglo-Norman invasion of 1169. The parish's own history describes it as one of only two royal castles in the Dublin area, the other being Dublin Castle. The settlement of that period was centred on the castle and the church, and had shops, streets, a gaol and a fair green.
Much of what became Co. Wicklow was administered from Newcastle until 1606, when the present county was created, and Newcastle became less important thereafter. According to the parish's own history, several churches have stood on the present site, the first built around 1189.
