About Movilla (Movilla Abbey)
Movilla (Movilla Abbey) is a Church of Ireland church in Movilla, County Down. It is in the Diocese of Down & Dromore.
History
Movilla Abbey Church has been in existence since June 1980, when it was launched as a new church plant by the leadership and members of Regent Street Methodist Church and St Mark's Church of Ireland. For 41 years two separate congregations, one Anglican and one Methodist, shared the building. On 10 October 2021 the two congregations came together as a single community, belonging equally to the Church of Ireland and the Methodist Church in Ireland.
The church stands in east Newtownards, a short distance beyond the ruins of Movilla Abbey and Movilla Cemetery.
