About Moira Methodist Church
Moira Methodist Church is a congregation of the Methodist Church in Ireland in Craigavon, County Down. It is part of the Glenavy & Moira in the North Western District.
History
John Wesley visited Moira in 1760 as a guest of Lord Rawdon, preaching to an assembled congregation outside St John's Church. By the latter part of the eighteenth century Methodists were meeting for worship in the town at a converted storehouse in the vicinity of Moira Mews. A purpose-built church was constructed on Main Street in 1822 and served the congregation until 2017.
Proposals for a new church were approved by the Methodist Church in Ireland in 2017. The last service in the 1822 building was held in June that year and the building was deconstructed in December, the congregation worshipping in the meantime at Moira Presbyterian Church. The new Moira Methodist Centre opened on the same site on 27 October 2018.
The building
The Moira Methodist Centre stands on the Main Street site occupied by the 1822 church. It comprises a church, a multi-purpose church hall, a coffee bar, a vestry, a kitchen and meeting rooms.
