About Meevagh Holy Trinity (Carrigart)
Meevagh Holy Trinity (Carrigart) was built between 1895 and 1902. It has a five-bay nave, built of squared stone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a four-stage tower, stained-glass windows, crenellated parapets and buttressed walls.
History
Designed by Sir Thomas Drew in the Early English Gothic Revival style, this Church of Ireland building replaced an earlier 1675 church. The three chancel stained-glass windows were installed in 1898 and donated by James Hay of Philadelphia, who also apparently funded the 1902 bell tower and clock faces. The interior contains a seventeenth-century marble font dated 1681, and the surrounding graveyard holds the family plot of the Clement family, including the Fourth and Fifth Earls of Leitrim, who were apparently buried here at their own wish.
