About Killelagh

Killelagh is a Church of Ireland church in Killelagh, County Derry. It is one of the churches in the parish of Maghera St Lurach, in the Diocese of Derry & Raphoe.

History

Killelagh parish is centred on the village of Swatragh, on the road from Maghera to Coleraine. Killelagh Old Church is associated with St Ciarán. Its name in Irish is given as Cill a' Locha, 'the church of the lough', from the small lough of the same name nearby.

The parish records a second, more fanciful account of the name, as Cill a' Lacha, 'the church of the duck'. In that story the holy man began to build his church on a site near Killelagh Lough, but a duck carried the mortar away in its beak to another location; St Ciarán took this as a sign of God's will and built where the old church stands.
