About Dromore Methodist Church
Dromore Methodist Church is a congregation of the Methodist Church in Ireland in Dromore, County Down. It is part of the Lagan Valley & South Down Circuit in the North Eastern District.
History
The congregation records that Methodism came to Dromore in 1779, when a minister from its mother church at Seymour Street in Lisburn preached in the street and several people came to faith. Those people formed the beginnings of a congregation, which built a sanctuary in 1815. That building was replaced in 1871 as the society grew.
At one time 12 class meetings were held regularly throughout the area, five in the town and the rest in the countryside, and cottage meetings were also held. The first library in the town was started in the Methodist hall and was in operation for at least a generation.
The building
The sanctuary has a gallery, with a minor hall connected to it. The congregation gives its capacity as around 300 people. A new hall and accompanying rooms were opened in 2009 for use by the wider community.
