About Comber Baptist Church

Comber Baptist Church is a Baptist church in Newtownards, County Down, a member of the Association of Baptist Churches in Ireland.

History

The congregation began with a meeting for prayer held on 24 March 1966 in the home of a couple who had moved to Comber from Portadown, after the elders of Newtownards Baptist Church and the Extension Committee of the Baptist Union of Ireland approached them about starting a Baptist work in the town. A gospel mission was held in August 1966, and the numbers attending afterwards outgrew the house, so Sunday afternoon services moved to the local band hall on Laurel Bank. The church was formed at a service on 17 November 1966, when 22 members signed the minute book.

A site was obtained on Mill Street and the church building there was opened on 1 May 1976. Pastor Jim Garrett was inducted as the first pastor on 2 September 1978 and concluded 15 years of ministry in July 1993, leaving for Portrush Baptist Church. He returned to live in Comber after his retirement from that pastorate and died on 28 July 2019.

The 50th anniversary was marked over the weekend of 19 and 20 November 2016, when a history of the congregation, "Fifty Years of God's Faithfulness 1966-2016", was launched.
