About Church of the Sacred Heart, Roscommon
Church of the Sacred Heart, Roscommon was built in 1903. It has a cruciform plan with a six-bay nave, built of limestone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a five-stage tower, stained-glass windows, an internal gallery and mosaic work. The spire was added in 1916.
The building
Designed by Walter Doolin, the church features rock-faced limestone walls with sandstone dressings. The façade includes blind arcading, rose windows and mosaic scenes in tympana. Interior elements comprise a carved organ gallery, marble gothic reredos and intricate cast-iron screen. The grounds contain a grotto and are bounded by stone walls with cast-iron railings.
