About Church of the Immaculate Conception, Scotshouse
Church of the Immaculate Conception, Scotshouse was built around 1850. It has a T-shaped plan with a four-bay nave and rendered walls under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include a three-stage tower, stained-glass windows, carved Stations of the Cross and a marble altar. The tower was added in 1860.
The building
Possibly designed by J.J McCarthy, the structure was renovated in 1911 and features north and south transepts with an east chancel. The whitewashed roughcast walls rest on a sandstone plinth, while the tower added in 1860-2 has a crenellated parapet, pointed-arch windows with hood-mouldings, and iron-framed lattice glazing. Inside, a timber-panelled roof with floral vaulting covers a nave containing a statue of Our Lady over the west entrance and a carved wooden pulpit, while the exterior faces the Dublin to Derry road and is bounded by a graveyard with cast-iron railings and fleur-de-lys finials.
