About Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar
Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar was built between 1897 and 1901. It has a cruciform plan with an eight-bay nave. Notable features include a three-stage tower, stained glass including a rose window, an internal gallery and an open timber roof.
History
Walter Glynn Doolin won a limited competition for the design. The church succeeded both St Mary’s Catholic Chapel, demolished in 1908–09, and the unfinished MacHale Church; after a storm in 1898, funds intended for a spire were used to reconstruct the south wall and south-aisle piers.
