About Christ the King, Shanballymore
Christ the King, Shanballymore was built in 1933. It has a cruciform plan with a four-bay nave, built of squared limestone under a pitched slate roof. Notable features include stained-glass windows, a bellcote and an internal gallery.
The building
The church stands on an elevated site in Shanballymore, Co. Cork, and is constructed from snecked squared limestone. The masonry apparently incorporates stones from the demolished chapel of Buttevant military barracks. A cast-iron railing, relocated from the entrance of an earlier nineteenth-century church, is positioned at the front of the current building.
