About Cathedral of St. Mary & St. Anne (North Cathedral)
Cathedral of St. Mary & St. Anne (North Cathedral) dates from 1808. The church is built of rubble sandstone. Notable features include a five-stage tower, stained-glass windows, a marble altar and pinnacles.
History
After a fire devastated the cathedral in 1820, rebuilding was carried out to designs by George Pain. In the 1860s Sir John Benson designed the western tower and great western door, Samuel Hynes added the sacristy and baptistry, and Boyd Barrett rebuilt the chancel in 1964. Richard Hurley & Associates repaired and restored the building in the late 1990s.
