About Caledon Presbyterian Church

Caledon Presbyterian Church is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland in Caledon, County Tyrone.

History

The congregation's own history traces its origins to the Kinard congregation, which by 1691 covered a large area extending into Co. Armagh, Co. Monaghan and Co. Tyrone. As congregations grew, representations were made to the Church Synod in favour of dividing that area into distinct congregations. In March 1807 the Presbyterians of Caledon sought a minister of their own. The congregation's history records that the meeting house was built on its present site 17 years later, when John Allen was ordained as the first minister, though its list of ministers dates his ministry from 1814.

The Lecture Hall was built in 1906 and a complete renovation of the church followed in 1908. Following major restoration work, the church was reopened by the Moderator of the General Assembly on 21 April 1996.

The building

The renovation of 1908 reordered the interior, replacing the original central aisle with side aisles. New pews were installed together with a new choir and pulpit, and a gallery was added on a mezzanine floor. The gallery remains in place.
