About Brannockstown Baptist Church
Brannockstown Baptist Church is a Baptist church in Brannockstown, County Kildare, a member of the Association of Baptist Churches in Ireland.
History
The congregation was founded around 1870 by John La Touche, master of the Harristown estate. The La Touche family had left France at the Huguenot expulsion, and David La Touche was the first of them to settle in Ireland, purchasing Harristown from the Eustace family in 1768. His great-grandson John La Touche became a Christian and was baptised by C. H. Spurgeon at the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London. He gathered a small congregation, which in its early years met in a cottage in the village.
John La Touche taught and cared for the congregation and made provision for its continuation after his death in 1904.
The building
The chapel, erected in 1882, is built of limestone and red sandstone in the gothic style. A manse stands next door, built after the chapel. The church also has halls and enclosed grounds.
