About Ballyscullion St Tida (Bellaghy)

Ballyscullion St Tida (Bellaghy) is a Church of Ireland church in Ballyscullion, County Derry. It is in the Diocese of Derry & Raphoe.

History

The church building dates from 1792 and is listed. The graveyard beside it has been in use since at least the early 1700s according to parish records. It served predominantly, but not exclusively, the local Protestant community: originally, the parish records, these would all have been St Tida's church members, and later, as Presbyterian, Baptist and other congregations became established in the district, people who would have had some links with St Tida's would have been able to purchase family and single plots.

Notable features

A vault formerly used by the Downing family, carrying an inscription, stands near the path to the church. The parish records gravestones and memorials in the graveyard relating to the Battle of the Boyne, the Siege of Derry, the sea battle of Trafalgar, the Gallipoli campaign, the Somme and the evacuation of Dunkirk.
