About Ballycrochan Presbyterian Church
Ballycrochan Presbyterian Church is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland in Bangor, County Down.
History
Ballycrochan Presbyterian Church began in 1974 as a new fellowship under the Presbyterian Church in Ireland's Church Extension Scheme, formed as Bangor expanded into what had been fields and new housing was built in the area. The founding members met at first in a wooden hut and used a biscuit tin for the weekly offerings.
The foundation stone was laid on 29 October 1977, and Ballycrochan became a fully-fledged congregation in 1981. That building proved too small for the growing congregation and was later given over to use as halls. The Kirk Session began to plan a new church to accommodate 500 at worship, and the Presbyterian Church in Ireland agreed to make a large contribution to the building fund. An opportunity was realized to build a free-standing hall for youth work, to be known as the Special Purpose Unit, through a government job-creation scheme at the cost of materials alone, and the project became an integral part of the congregation's building programme.
The new church was opened by the Moderator of the General Assembly on Saturday 13 October 1990.
